HOUSTON, Texas – Senior Will Kearsey broke just about every 100 yard backstroke record possible on Friday night. Kearsey set a new personal best, meet record, UConn record, and conference record in the event with a time of 45.93 in the 400 medley relay race. He currently holds the 14th overall time in the country in the 100 yard backstroke. Kearsey won gold in the event finals with a time of 46.08.
"It was a good day today, I felt pretty good. Managed to drop a best time by a couple tenths and really just wanted to empty the tank in the finals," said Kearsey. "The relay was just an added bonus and I can't complain. It's a fantastic feeling, when you think you've given everything and then you just give a little more. That's when great things happen."
In the 100 backstroke console finals, junior Will Mudlaff set a personal best time, earning him fifth place, coming in at 49.99. Junior Joseph and sophomore Orry Zayit took sixth and eighth respectively.
Junior Rowan King set a school record in the 100 yard breaststroke in Friday's prelim race with a time of 54.35. King finished in sixth place in the event finals, coming in at 54.45.
"I wanted to be focused and get out there as soon as I got up this morning. I wanted to get in there and get it done," said King. "It felt really nice to see that time on the board. It feels good accomplishing one of my goals this year. Getting the record gives you that satisfaction that you're moving forward and continuing to compete at a higher level."
In the 200 yard freestyle finals Junior Joshua Wroblewski took seventh place, finishing at 1:37.91. In the console finals, sophomore Alfred Hansen took first place with a personal best time of 1:37.93 and junior Kyle Dunlap took third, coming in at a personal best 1:38.20.
Senior Cooper Knapp took second place in the 100 yard butterfly finals with a time of 47.18, less than a second off a personal best. In the console finals, Will Mudlaff took second with a personal best 48.96 and Orry Zayit took fourth, also with a personal best, at 49.15.
In the 400 IM finals, freshman Gavin Moak finished seventh overall and recorded a personal best time of 3:53.29.
