Holtmann and Provenzano Win at QU Invite

HAMDEN, Conn. – The UConn men's tennis team competed at the Quinnipiac Invitational over the weekend and came home with "B" Flight doubles title.
The duo of junior John Michael Holtmann (Coral Gables, Fla.) and sophomore Christian Provenzano (Montclair, N.J.) played their way through the "B" Flight bracket, winning three matches together to take the title.
Holtmann and Provenzano opened by beating Townsend Font and Sarabia of Fairfield, 6-4 in their first match of the weekend. The two then moved to the finals with a win over QU's Alester Magalit and Bryan Schick, winning by default, then took the final match-up by beating Fairfield's Edwards and Mitrovic, 7-5.
Holtmann also notched a win in the "A" Flight in singles play, beating Schibles of Fairfield, 6-2 and 6-4 in the second round. He would miss out on a semifinal appearance after a three-set battle with Patrick Cachapero of QU. Holtmann won the first set, 6-3, dropped the second 6-3 and lost in a heartbreaking tiebreaker set, 15-13.
Freshmen Luke Riemann (Cheshire, Conn.), Rami Scheetz (Cedar Rapids, Ia.) and Alex Yu (Nanjing, China) all won a match in the consolation bracket. Riemann beat QU's Clark Davis, 8-5 while Scheetz defeated Magailt, also of QU, 8-3. Yu was an 8-1 winner over Davis as well. Junior Yili Zheng (Shanghai, China) won his consolation match over QU's Hielke Moore, 9-7.
The Huskies return to action next weekend when they play in the Brown Invitational.
