PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The UConn men's tennis team spent the weekend at the Brown Invitational competing in a blind draw dual match tournament. The Huskies faced Boston College, Villanova and Bryant over the three-day event.
"I thought we really elevated our level of play from Friday to Sunday," commented associate head coach Christian Appleman. "Our guys are trying to implement the things we have been working on in practice and even though we are experiencing some short-term setbacks, we will continue to get better and better."
UConn freshman Rami Scheetz (Cedar Rapids, Ia.) had a big weekend for the Huskies, posting three doubles wins and a singles victory to lead the way. Junior John Michael Holtmann (Coral Gables, Fla) and sophomore Christian Provenzano (Monclair, N.J.) both earned a pair of doubles victories on the weekend.
Scheetz teamed with three different Huskies to go 3-0 on the weekend. He and Holtmann took down Mason Fung and Max Palmer of Boston College on Friday, 7-5. He played with Provenzano on Saturday and the duo took down Villanova's brother combo of Stefan and Justin Suarez, 6-3. On Sunday, Scheetz and junior Yili Zheng (Shanghai, China) beat Bryant's Alexander Schou and Andrew Forchetti, 6-4.
Holtmann and Provenzano also teamed to earn a win over the Byrant combo of Ortiz and Corrado, 7-6 (1). On Friday, the senior-freshman tandem of Evan Powell (Guilford, Conn.) and Luke Reimann (Cheshire, Conn.) posted a 7-6 (4) win over BC's Max Motiagh and Nicholas deQuesada.
The Huskies got singles wins over Bryant from Scheetz, Zheng and Reimann on Sunday, all three-set battles. Scheetz took down Grant Pertile of Bryant, 6-3, 5-7 and 10-8 in the tie-breaker. Zheng rebounded from dropping the first set, 6-2, to Bryant's Schou to win 7-6, and 10-6. Riemann also bounced back from a first set loss, 6-1 to Philip Belmatch, winning 6-3 and 10-5.
"Our energy is improving, and so is our self-discipline," stated Appleman. "I like the fact we are playing with more focus and purpose instead of just pounding tennis balls all over the place. We've improved in many areas over the past month, I am anxious to see where we will be on October 12."
The Huskies will have a weekend off before returning to action on Saturday, October 12 when they host Sacred Heart and Holy Cross in dual matches on the UConn Tennis Courts.
