Fall Season Opens with UConn Invitational

STORRS, Conn. - The 2019-20 UConn men's tennis season will get underway this weekend on the Huskies' home courts as they play host to Sacred Heart, Marist and Merrimack in the annual UConn Invitational. The weekend's tournament will feature a blind dual match format over the three days. The Huskies will be making their debut under new associate head coach Christian Appleman this weekend.
The schedule for the weekend on the UConn Tennis Courts will feature teams playing four doubles and seven singles matches against each other.
Friday:Â Â UConn vs Sacred Heart
Saturday:Â Â UConn vs Marist;Â SHU vs Merrimack; Marist vs. Merrimack
Sunday:Â UConn vs Merrimack; SHU vs Marist
The Huskies have a trio of upper classmen in senior Evan Powell (Guilford, Conn.) and juniors Yili Zheng (Shanghai, China) and John Michael Holtmann (Coral Gables, Fla.) returning to lead a young group. Holtmann led the Huskies in both singles and doubles win totals last season. He was 20-17 in doubles play while collecting 18 singles wins on the year. Zheng had a 19-19 mark in doubles play last season. Sophomore Christian Provenzano (Montclair, N.J.) is also back after a 10-win season in singles play as a rookie.
Four incoming freshmen will make their debuts for the Huskies over the weekend in Nicholas Gore (Kingston, Jamaica), Luke Riemann (Cheshire, Conn.), Alex Yu (Nanjing, China) and Rami Scheetz (Cedar Rapids, Ia.).
Following this weekend's home tournament, the Huskies will head to the Quinnipiac Invitational and the Brown Invitational the next two weekends. A home dual match with Sacred Heart on October 12 will set up the rest of the season with UConn playing in the ITA Regional at Penn and the Army West Point Invite to close out the fall.
