Hervol shoots a 2-under 69 in final round
INNISBROOK, Fla. – UConn senior Jimmy Hervol finished his college career with a round of 2-under par 69 as he led the Huskies to a sixth-place finish Tuesday at the American Athletic Conference Championship at the Par 71 Copperhead Course of the Innisbrook Resort.
Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) shot the sub-70 round on his way to an aggregate 1-over 74-71-69=214. The 214 is a UConn record for the conference tournament, topping by one stroke the then-record 215 score Hervol set last year. It resulted in the third consecutive individual Top 10 Finish in the event for Hervol, as he finished alone in eighth place among the 50-player field. As a sophomore, Hervol also finished eighth in the event and last season, he finished in a tie for eighth -- all three years, the best finish ever by a UConn player in the AAC Championship.
The Huskies placed four players – Hervol, redshirt junior Drake Hull, sophomore Jack Boulger and senior Nick Harrington – among the top 30 to spark UConn to an aggregate team score of 26-over 296-295-287=878, the best score by a UConn team at the AAC Championship, equaling UConn's best-ever finish of sixth (also 2017) in the 10-team tourney. UConn deadlocked with Cincinnati (878) for sixth place, behind tourney champion Memphis (852), runner-up SMU (864), UCF (865), USF (870) and Temple (873). Finishing behind the Huskies were ECU (884), Houston (889) and Wichita State (901).
Hervol also set the UConn school record for the best per-round average in a season, posting a 71.06 this year for 32 rounds and he owns the UConn record for the finest four-year, per-round average as well, with a 72.51 average for 130 rounds. He far and away has the UConn career records for most sub-70 rounds with 26 and most par-or-better rounds with 61.
The eighth-place finish Tuesday was Hervol's eighth Top 10 and ninth Top 20 Finish of the 2018-19 season. In 45 events during his college career, he had 21 Top 10 and 28 Top 20 Finishes.
Hull (Rutland, Vt.) and Boulger (Walpole, Mass.) were part of a tie for 21st place as they shot 8-over 76-75-70=221 and 8-over 75-73-73=221, respectively. The one-under 70 gave Hull 20 rounds of par-or-better this year and 35 for his UConn career. His 71.88 per round average this season was second on the team.
Harrington (Chaplin, Conn.) tied for 28th place by posting a 9-over 71-76-75=222, including his 15th round of par or better this year and the 33rd of his college career. Redshirt junior Zach Iannone (Hamden, Conn.) rounded out the UConn contingent with a 22-over 78-78-79=235.
The sixth-place finish gives UConn nine finishes of sixth place or better in the 11 events that made up the 2018-19 schedule. The Huskies won the team title in the UConn Invitational and also finished second twice and third twice – five finishes in the Top Three.
