Tops 78-Player Field
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – UConn redshirt junior Drake Hull captured the first tournament victory of his college career Sunday, topping a 78-player field to win individual medalist honors at the Rutherford Intercollegiate, played at the Penn State Blue Course.
Hull (Rutland, Vt.) began Sunday's final round as part of a four-way tie for third place on the leaderboard, but fired a 3-under par 68 – his third straight sub-par round of the tournament – in tough, rainy conditions, to not only break free of the tie, but also pass the golfers who had held first and second place.
Hull's 5-under 70-70-68=208 won the tourney by one stroke over David Hicks of William & Mary, the first outright individual win by a UConn player this season. The 208 total equaled the lowest tourney score of his career (also a 208 at the Doc Gimmler Invitational) and also hiked his total of par-or-better rounds to 19 this season and 35 for his career. Hull also has nine sub-70 rounds. It was Hull's third Top 10 and sixth Top 20 Finish this season, giving him five and 10 career totals, respectively.
Hull, who led the field in scoring on the Par 3 holes (-2), sparked the Huskies to a fourth-place finish in the 13-team event with an aggregate 11-over 290-282-291=863, eight strokes behind tournament champion Penn State. It is UConn's sixth Top Five Finish in 10 events this season. UConn has finished only one tournament lower than seventh.
Senior Jimmy Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) notched his seventh Top 10 Finish this year and the 20th of his career with his even-par 73-69-71=213 to tie for ninth place. Hervol now has 17 rounds of par-or-better this season and 59 in his career, as well as 25 career sub-70 rounds.
Also for the Huskies, redshirt junior Zach Iannone (Hamden, Conn.) shot a 9-over 73-73-76=222 to tie for 35th place, while sophomore Jack Boulger (Walpole, Mass.) and senior Nick Harrington (Chaplin, Conn.) were part of a tie for 37th place with a 10-over 76-71-76=223 and a 10-over 74-72-77=223, respectively. It included Boulger's fifth round of par-or-better for the season and ninth of his career.
Playing as an individual, UConn freshman Nick Hampoian (North Reading, Mass.) finished in a tie for 32nd place with an 8-over 72-77-72=221, his lowest aggregate score of the year.
The Rutherford was UConn's final event before it heads for the American Athletic Conference Championship, set for April 21-23 at the Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Fla.
