UConn takes on UCF to open conference play

ORLANDO, Fla.—The UConn softball team (9-14, 0-1 AAC) opened American Athletic Conference play against Central Florida (21-9, 1-0 AAC). The Huskies kicked off the weekend series with first-pitch at the Knights' Softball Complex.
The contest was one of intense defense from both teams with only 10 hits posted collectively.
UConn was led by sophomore Marybeth Olson in the circle, going six innings while facing 28 batters and an ERA of 1.56. UCF opened the match up scoring in the bottom of the first inning. The Huskies kept the Knights scoreless for the remainder of the tournament.
Briana Marcelino and Ashley Esty nabbed the two hits for UConn on the night. A few batters into the top of the fifth, Marcelino doubled to left field but was left stranded. Esty's single through the left side came in the top of third.
The Huskies will play game two of weekend series tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
