EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - The UConn men's tennis team got their first glimpse at American Athletic Conference competition on Friday, hosting the ECU Pirates at the East Hartford Tennis Club on Friday. The Huskies fell short, losing to ECU 4-0 in a match played in clinch format.
The Huskies even their record at 5-5 overall and ECU improved to 8-1.
"The guys came out firing in all three doubles and the guys put it all on the line today, it just didn't bounce our way," stated associate head coach Reinaldo Valor. "Yili Zheng and Hank Hill set the tone by winning their match on court one but John Holtmann and Jack McLister lost a tough battle at number two in a tiebreaker to lose the doubles point. The doubles point is big for us and something we pride ourselves on. If we continue our level of play and intensity so big results are coming our way."
The Huskies opened doubles strong with senior Hank Hill (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Yili Zheng (Shanghai, China) earning their 16th doubles victory together by beating Austin Allen and Diogo Marques at No. 1. The opening point came down to the No. 2 match between UConn's senior-sophomore tandem of Jack McLister (Leesbur, Va.) and John Michael Holtmann (Coral Gables, Fla.) and Wisse Jonker and Javier Renones. The ECU duo snuck out the win in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (5).
In singles, ECU clinched the match with wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4.
The Huskies are right back in action on Saturday night, hosting Fairfield University at the East Hartford Tennis Club.
