EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – The UConn men's tennis team ran their record to 2-0 this spring against state rivals as they picked-up a 4-2 win over Fairfield University Saturday night at the East Hartford Tennis Club. The Huskies improved to 6-5 overall with the win.
"The guys kept up there tough doubles play taking the doubles point and our intensity and belief is growing with each match," stated associate head coach Reinaldo Valor. "We believe we can win the doubles point against anyone."
The Huskies impressed in double action with senior Jack McLister (Leesburg, Va.) and sophomore John Michael Holtmann (Coral Gables, Fla.) getting things started with a 6-2 win at No. 2 over Rodgers and Magid. UConn clinched the opening point at the No. 1 spot as senior Hank Hill (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Yili Zheng (Shanghai, China) continued their dominant play together, winning their 17th match on the year by beating Edwards and Shibles, 6-3.
In singles play, all three Husky seniors delivered UConn the match with big wins. Senior Justin Warren (Durham, N.C.) posted a come-back three-set win, rebounding from dropping the opening set 6-3 to Hatala to win 6-1, 6-0. Warren won his team-best 12th singles match.
McLister won at No. 3 over Rodgers, taking the opening set in a tie break, 7-6 (4) and winning 6-3. Then Hill clinched the match at No. 4, winning in three sets over Magid. He took the first set 7-5, dropped the second 6-2, then stormed back in the third set for a commanding 6-2 win.
"I'm so proud of the effort today and it truly was a team win," stated Valor. "We have a quick turnaround tomorrow against a good Bucknell team. It was a big day for Hank clinching the doubles point and the match with his singles win. I am excited for the potential of this team."
