EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - The UConn football team (2-9,0-7) came back from multiple 10-point deficits to tie the game in the fourth quarter but ultimately lost its home American Athletic Conference finale 31-24 against East Carolina at Pratt and Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field.

Freshman Jack Zergiotis became the sixth UConn quarterback in program history to throw for more than 400 yards with 418 passing yards against the Pirates and career-high three passing touchdowns. It was the second time in the FBS era that at UConn freshman has tossed for 400 yards (Casey Cochran, vs. Memphis, 2013) and its the third-most passing yards in a single-game.

"We still battled, said head coach Randy Edsall. "We found a way to come back and give ourselves an opportunity there at the end."

Trailing 31-24 and at the ECU 5, the Huskies had a chance to tie or go-ahead with eight seconds to go. But an interception at the one-yard line on fourth down sealed the victory for the Pirates.

Freshman wide out Cam Ross could not be contained, hauling in eight receptions for 169 yards and two touchdowns. Ross tied the game in the fourth with the second longest pass play in UConn history, a 94-yard catch and run for the Newark, Del. native.

"The play was originally an option play," said Ross. "We said if it was zero coverage so then I just run straight past him and got straight up the middle of the field."

Fellow freshman Matt Drayton logged three receptions for 99 yards while Jay Rose nabbed three catches for 42 yards and one touchdown.

The UConn defense dialed up the pressure with a pair of takeaways. Keyshawn Paul and Diamond Harrell each picked off Holton Ahlers, it's the fourth game this season the Huskies have registered multiple interceptions.

Freshman linebacker Jackson Mitchell led the way with a career-high 15 tackles including one for a loss.
