Huskies Fall to Shockers in Four Sets

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn volleyball team fell to Wichita State in four sets on Friday night at Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies (8-13, 2-7 American) drop their sixth straight conference game. The Shockers (6-15, 3-6 American) win their second straight conference game.
How it Happened
The first set began with the teams exchanging points in an exciting back and forth set. After being tied 8-8, Wichita State went on an 8-4 run to take a 16-12 lead, forcing UConn to call a timeout. The Huskies could not make up the lost ground and fell 25-17 in set one. The second set was another tight contest at the start. The Shockers were able to pull away and take a 16-12 lead, forcing another UConn timeout. Wichita ended the set on a 9-5 run, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set saw the Huskies storm back and take an 11-6 lead, forcing Wichita to take a timeout. The Husky offense continued to score and UConn took the third set by a score of 25-20. The fourth and final set was a hard fought battle between both sides. The Shockers opened the set on a 6-0 run. After calling timeout, UConn battled back on an 11-7 run to cut the lead to 13-11. Wichita pulled away later in the set, but UConn would not go away. The Shocker lead was cut to 20-18, forcing Wichita into another timeout. The Huskies fought hard, but their comeback fell short, as Wichita took the final set 25-20, and the match 3-1.
UConn showed great heart and fight in Friday's match, with positive signs both offensively and defensively. R-Sophomore Courtney Morris led the Huskies in assists (49), digs (16), total blocks (three), and service aces (two). Sophomore Caylee Parker had a team-high 15 kills and added 13 digs. Fellow sophomore Kennadie Jake-Turner tallied 12 kills and hit at a team-high .320. Junior Ally Barrett also recorded eight kills and 11 digs. Freshman Mia Ruffolo started for the Huskies again at libero, recording 12 digs and three assists. Fellow freshman Jasmine Davis added eight kills.
