STORRS, Conn.—The Huskies are a little closer to home, traveling to the New York, N.Y. to compete in the Columbia Challenge in the Big Apple. The three-day meet will begin on Thursday, Jan. 24th and conclude on Saturday, Jan. 26th.
UConn participated in Columbia's two day East-West Challenge back in 2017, racking up 18 personal bests at the Armory Track and Field Center. Finishing fifth overall, Head Coach J.J. Clark was very proud of the effort as various conference and national marks were set in different events.
The Huskies have had a phenomenal start to the 2019 Indoor campaign, having competed at the Nittany Lion Challenge and most recently the two day Vanderbilt Invitational. UConn commenced the indoor season at the Nittany Lion Challenge with three first-place finishes in the Mile, Weight Throw, and Shot Put. The Huskies were led by the efforts of Susan Aneno, Amaris Blount, and Divine Oladipo in addition to 10 personal records. Numerous student-athletes carried over their success into the Vanderbilt Invitational, especially Aneno. Her 800m time of 2:03.94 broke Vanderbilt's school record, placed her second overall, and notched the No.2 time in the country.
Other top track finishers were Jaclyn Gallery, finished third at 17:07.52 in the 5000m and Mia Nahom who led the way in mile with a time of 4:54.51 for a third place finish. The field events were spearheaded by Blount and Oladipo, finishing in the top-10 in the Weight Throw and Shot Put. The Pole Vault in addition to the Long and High Jumps were also bright spots for the Huskies. Taylor Woods competed in the long jump at 6.03m for sixth place. For top-30 finishes in the high jump were Kelly Ward and Julia Sullivan at 15th—1.65m and 25th—1.55m respectively. Emma Chee and Megan Biscoglio place top-20 in the pole vault at 3.69m and 3.54m.
After the Vanderbilt Invitational Coach Clark stated, "We had some more personal records established today and put some national marks on the board, overall we are moving in the right direction."
