UConn Faces Rutgers on Friday Night
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn volleyball team opened up their weekend hosting the Dog Pound Challenge with a 3-0 sweep over the College of the Holy Cross Crusaders Friday afternoon in Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies will close the opening day of the tournament later Friday night hosting Rutgers.
The Huskies notched their third three-set sweep of the season as they improve to 7-4 on the year. UConn never trailed in the opening set and turned in a 25-19 win. The second set featured five ties before the Huskies turned 14-14 into a 24-17 lead before winning 25-20. The Crusaders jumped out to a 7-3 lead to start the third but the Huskies answered with a 10-2 run to force a time-out and take control of the set. UConn never trailed again on the way to closing it out 25-18.
R-Senior Danielle Cabel (Bettendorf, Iowa) and r-sophomore Genna Florig (Portland, Ore.) led the way with 10 kills apiece. Florig hit .533 (10-2-15) in the match and collected four total blocks. Freshman Caylee Parker (Windsor, Ontario) posted 10 digs and just missed a double double with eight kills.
Senior Emma Turner (Winter Park, Fla.) passed out 32 assists, had seven digs and two blocks and finished with four kills in six attempts.
The Huskies will battle the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at 7 pm at Gampel Pavilion and close the tournament on Saturday facing St. John's at 1 pm.
