STORRS, Conn. – Freshman defender Camryn Wong was named the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week, as announced by Hockey East this afternoon. Wong is the first recipient of the award for the 2018-19 season.
Opening her freshman season in exhilarating fashion, Wong's impact was felt immediately by the UConn women's hockey team. In a matchup where both teams exchanged blow-for-blow, the Vancouver, B.C. native, delivered both backbreaking blows to St. Cloud State this past weekend – the first in an overtime thriller, the second with three minutes left in regulation – to give the Huskies a 2-0 series win over SCSU.
"…It looks like it's Cam Wong's weekend, because she scored again," said sixth-year head coach Chris MacKenzie. "It was another game-winner, I don't know how that went in…it hit something, got some kind of bounce, and it went in. I'm happy we got the win.
The Huskies hit the road to open Hockey East play with a Saturday night contest against the Vermont Catamounts. Puck drop is slated for 6 p.m.
