Women's Cross Country Begins Season on Saturday

STORRS, Conn. - Coming off a trip to the NCAA Regional in 2016, the UConn women's cross country team is ready to kick off the 2017 season at the Minuteman Invitational in Amherst, Mass on Saturday, September 9.
Head Coach J.J. Clark returns 16 veterans to the roster, including all six runners who helped aid the program to a top-15 finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional in 2016.
Junior Courtney Akerley is coming off her best NCAA Regional time after posting a 21:56.50 mark to pacing all Huskies with a team-best 68th finish in the field.
Classmate Haley Hasty came in 84th at the Northeast Regional, after posting a time of 22:06.30. Hasty returns as one of the team's top runners after coming in fifth (17:40.80) at the 2016 Rothernberg Run, and leading the team to a second-place finish.
In just their first trip to a regional, then-freshmen Mary Monda Oewel and Lauren Scahill turned in top-100 times as well, finishing 87th and 100th, respectively.
After leading the Huskies to a fourth-place finish at the 2016 American Athletic Conference Championships, senior Erika Randazzo looks to build off her top-25 conference finish in her final season as a Husky.
Additionally, UConn adds seven new runners to the roster for the 2017 season. Brianna O'Brien, Alexandra Alsup, Mia Nahom, Jacklyn Gallery, Kate Romanchick, Rachel Vick and Morocca Wiley will round out Clark's squad as opening day is just right around the corner.
The Huskies open the season on Saturday when they travel to the Minuteman Invitational in Amherst, Mass. UConn will then travel to New York on Sept. 15 for the UB Stampede Invitation before concluding the month with events in Boston, Mass and Bethlehem, Pa. on Sept. 15 and Sept. 22, respectively.
October will feature three events, taking the squad back to Boston, Mass. For the New England Championship (10.7), before the Huskies head to Warwick, R.I. for the Rothenburg Race (10.13)
The American Athletic Conference Championship will be held in Philadelphia, Pa. at the Belomont Plateau on October 28.
The NCAA Northeast Regional takes place on November 11 in Amherst, N.Y., with the NCAA Championship will be held in Louisville, Kent. on Nov. 18.
