Connecticut Grabs Five First-Place Finishes at Hurricane Alumni Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The UConn men's track and field team capped off a solid weekend performance at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational, hosted by the University of Miami at Cobb Stadium.
Connecticut boasted five first-place finishes overall. On Friday, freshman Cameron Thompson set a new personal record in the hammer throw with a 59.78m toss. Connecticut also dominated the javelin on Friday, taking first and second place. Junior Kevin Foster won the event with a 65.86m throw and fellow junior Seth Zuidema took second with a 65.75m mark.
Patrick Meyer stood out in Friday's decathlon events, finishing in the top-three in all five of Friday's events and winning the long jump. After being in second after day one, Meyer finished strong on Saturday to clinch first-place in the decathlon.
Connecticut won the 4x100m relay (Landis, Amonu, Cook and Beram) on Saturday, coming in at 40.29.
In the 1500m run, UConn occupied four of the top-six spots in the finals. Senior Alvaro Chavez took second (3:55.61), PJ Garmon took third (3:55.77), Parker Timmerman finished just behind in fourth with a new personal record (3:55.85) and Michael McGonnigle rounded out the team in sixth (4:00.66). Timmerman also led the team in the 800m, finishing in 1:56.83.
Sophomore Ian Bergere won the pole vault with a new personal record 5.00m mark. Junior Chandler Ives took fourth in that event with a 4.75m vault.
Connecticut swept the top-three spots in the triple jump. Sophomore Malik Snead claimed first-place in the triple jump with a 15.33m leap while freshmen Nile Uzzell (15.15m) and Ronel Forde (15.02m) finished second and third, respectively.
Senior captain Chinedu Amonu led by example in the 400m dash, recording a time of 47.11 to claim second place. Trenten Beram took sixth in that same event with a time of 47.65.
Matthew Graziano boasted the second-best mark in the discus (53.28m) and was just 0.54m short of his personal best.
