UConn Boasts Two Individual First-Place Titles at UPenn Challenge

PHILADELPHIA - The UConn men's track and field team continued its success in the 2017 outdoor season at the UPenn Challenge on Saturday, March 25. Connecticut finished third overall as a team with 99 points behind Army (134) and meet champion and host Penn (162).

Freshman Stedman Cook brought home his first collegiate individual first-place finish after he claimed the 200m title with a time of 21.66, just four hundredths of a second shy of his personal best. Senior John Landis came in second in the 200m with a new PR time of 22.17.
Freshman Eric Van Der Els set a personal record in the 1500m, finishing in the top-five with a career-best time of 3:51.51 in a field of 36 competitors.
UConn dominated in the 5000m run, placing four athletes in the top-five. Aidan Fiol, Kyle Brackman, Michael McGonnigle and Cameron Gerrelts combined for 20 total points in that event.
Senior Randall Wall contributed six points by claiming third-place in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.73.
Connecticut's 4x400m relay team (Amonu, Cook, Chavez, Mackay-Morgan) brought home second-place, finishing just behind Princeton.
In the pole vault, junior Chandler Ives and sophomore Ian Bergere combined for five points. Ives took fourth with a 4.75m vault, while Bergere also registered a 4.75m mark but finished in sixth.
Freshman Ronel Forde earned his third career individual first-place finish as he claimed the title in the triple jump with a 14.40m leap. Freshman Ivan Nyemeck took third in that event with a 13.76m mark.
Senior Matthew Graziano continued UConn's success in the throws, taking third-place in the discus (50.90m). Freshman Cameron Thompson captured his second consecutive first-place title in the hammer throw with a 58.00m toss.
