HONOLULU, Hawaii - Freshman Carli Cutler blasted her second home run of the season on Thursday night, but the UConn softball team was stifled by Hawaii pitcher Brittany Hitchcock in a 4-1 loss in the Rainbow Wahine Classic.
Freshman Katie Koshes (3-3) picked up the loss for the Huskies (8-13), allowing four runs on six hits in 4.2 innings. She struck-out three and walked three in her outing. Sophomore Jill Stockley pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Cutler went 2-for-3 with an RBI - the only Husky to record hits off Hitchcock, who picked up nine strikeouts in the game. The UConn freshman extended her hitting streak to four games and has five multi-hit games this season.
Just two nights after striking out 11 batters in a complete-game win against Hawaii, Koshes struggled in the first inning - surrendering a three-run home run to Callee Heen that put the Huskies behind, 3-0.
Koshes settled down after that, pitching three consecutive scoreless frames before back-to-back doubles for Hawaii in the fifth inning resulted in a 4-0 deficit. Stockley entered the game at that point.
Heading into the seventh inning, the Huskies had just two base runners the entire game - before Cutler smacked a lead-off solo homer to center field against Hitchcock. It ended the shutout, but UConn lost its third-straight in Honolulu.
