Volleyball Faces 3-0 Setback against SMU

STORRS, Conn. ââ'¬" Redshirt-sophomore Kayla Williams recorded her team-leading 11th double-double, but it wasn't enough as the UConn volleyball team faced a 3-0 setback against SMU in American action on Friday night at Guyer Gym ââ'¬" 25-23, 25-20, 27-25.
SMU's offense held a slight edge over the home team, as the Mustangs posted a .275 hitting percentage and 50 kills to the Huskies .248 hitting percentage and 44 kill performance. With the loss, UConn (10-11) falls to 3-6 in conference action, while SMU (14-6) improves to 8-1 on the year.
Williams' tallied a match-high 16 kills and posted a team-best 10 digs on her way to a second-straight double-double. Her 16 kills paced all players, including three SMU players who joined Williams with double-digit kills. The outside hitter was one of three players to collect 10-plus kills in the match, trailing only Montanta Watts (18) and Kendall Patterson (13).
Set One (25-23)
The Mustangs grabbed an early 3-2 lead and never looked back. UConn never trailed by more than five points in the set, but couldn't muster enough to complete the comeback, despite nine kills from Williams. A pair of errors by UConn would eventually seal the deal in SMU's 25-23 victory.
Set Two (25-20)
Neither team would give in the second game as the scored was knotted 16 different times, with neither team leading by more than one point. After knotting the score 17-17 on a kill by freshman Ally Barrett, Meryn Kennedy served SMU to three-straight points and a 20-17 advantage. The visitors finished the set on a 5-3 run to grab the second game, 25-20.
Set Three (27-25)
The Mustangs completed the sweep with a 27-25 win in the third, scoring the last three points after UConn scored five straight to take a 25-24 lead. Brittany Adams and Lexi Nordmann combined for a block on the final point to secure the sweep.
UConn will host conference foe Tulsa on Sunday, Oct. 22. The contest is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m.
