STORRS, Conn. - Sophomore Briana Colangelo has been selected Women's Hockey East Player of the Week, following her five-point weekend in a pair of wins over Union on Friday and Saturday at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum.
It is the first conference award of the year for the Huskies (3-2-0, 0-1-0 WHEA) and the first-career nod for Colangelo as WHEA Player of the Week. She accounted for three goals and two assists in the two victories.
"Briana is really consistent; she's a consistent player who shows up and does her thing," said head coach Chris MacKenzie after Saturday's game. "We're happy to have her and considering the amount she has played, it's amazing she is only a sophomore."
Colangelo scored two goals and added an assist in Friday's 6-1 win over the Dutchwomen, with the second tally coming on a power play in the third period and giving the Huskies a 5-0 lead.
In Saturday's rematch, the sophomore forward gave UConn a 1-0 lead less than six minutes into the game when she capitalized on passes from freshman Morgan Wabick and sophomore Emily Reid. She assisted on Wabick's goal later in the period.
Colangelo leads the team with four goals this season, while being tied with freshman Natalie Snodgrass for a team-high seven points. She becomes the first Husky since senior Leah Lum back on Jan. 30 to win the WHEA POTW honor.
The second-year forward is off to a strong start in her sophomore campaign, building off a successful freshman season where she played in all 36 games - ranking second on the team in goals (9) and first in assists (16).
UConn returns to action on Friday when No. 3 Boston College comes to the Freitas Ice Forum. Puck drop is at 6 p.m. (ET) and Jack Templeton will have the call on the Husky Vision live stream.
