Volleyball Shuts Down Tulane, 3-1

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Redshirt-sophomore Kayla Williams recorded 17 kills as the UConn volleyball team took down conference foe Tulane in four sets, 3-1, on Sunday evening. With the win, the Huskies (9-7) improve to 2-2 in AAC action, while Tulane (12-5) falls to 1-3.
Junior Kennedy Arundel paced all Huskies with 12 digs and two aces, while classmate Iman McGary notched a season-high 11 digs in the match. Senior Tosin Adeniyi accumulated two total blocks, while junior Emma Turner led the way with 40 assists.
UConn snapped a two-game skid with the victory and grabbed its first conference road win of 2017.
Set One (25-21)
The Huskies boasted a match-high .351 hitting percentage in the first set, behind 18 team kills. Williams headlined the offense with five kills, while Adeniyi added four of her own. UConn trailed for most of the set before knotting the score 20-20. The Huskies would then string together a 5-1 run to close out the first set with a 25-21 victory.
Set Two (25-20)
UConn's offensive continued to do damage, as the team tallied a .345 hitting percentage. Three players led the way with three kills apiece, while Adrundel served the team's only ace. Defensively, Adeniyi played a hand in all three of her team's blocks, helping to hold the Green Wave to a .065 hitting percentage.
Set Three (19-25)
Tulane was able to avoid the sweep after holding UConn to a .083 hitting percentage. Additionally, the Green Wave served three aces in the set as their offense began to find their groove. Despite UConn earning an early lead, Tulane battled to grab a 3-1 led they would fail to relinquish.
Set Four (25-22)
Williams headlined the final set with a team-best five kills and four digs. The set was evenly matched, as the two teams traded the lead four different times. Tulane held the edge in total blocks (4), while UConn recorded 11 kills as a team. The Green Wave saw their share of miscues as Tulane suffered a -.056 hitting percentage.
UConn returns home next week, taking on conference rival Cincinnati on Friday, Oct. 6 at 7:00 p.m.
