STORRS, Conn. - Senior goalkeeper Nina Klein recorded her fifth shutout of the season as the No. 1 UConn field hockey team overpowered Massachusetts, 8-0, Sunday afternoon for its 11th straight victory. The Huskies remain a perfect 11-0 in 2017, while the Minutewomen fall to 8-4 on the season.
Klein now owns 31 career blank sheets, good for second on the program's all-time career shutout list. Klein sits just two shutouts away from matching Sarah Mansfield's 33, set in 2014.
With the win, Head Coach Nancy Stevens recorded her 650th career victory, as the winningest coach in NCAA Division I history becomes the first to reach the 650-win plateau.
Offensively, freshman Jessica Dembrowski notched her first career goal in the outing, as five different UConn players posted goals in the win. Junior Amanda Collins paced all Huskies with nine points (2g, 5a), marking a new career-high for points in a single game.
The Huskies scored early in the tilt behind a goal from senior Casey Umstead at 12:45, for the 1-0 lead. The senior concluded the game with six points (2g, 2a), while recording her fourth game-winning goal this fall.
Nearly 10 minutes later, Collins picked up her first tally of the contest, after connecting with Dembrowski in the 24th minute. Limiting UMass to only two shots in the first half, the Huskies held a comfortable 2-0 edge after 35 minutes of play.
UConn was aided by six, second-half goals, four of which came off penalty corners. Sophomore Antonia Tiedtke kicked off the scoring with a deflection in the 41st minute, before Umstead made it a four goal game, 4-0, just 63 seconds later.
The home team would later grab a 6-0 edge thanks to a pair of goals from Tiedtke and Dembrowski at 45:58 and 52:50, respectively. UConn would go on to score their seventh and eight unanswered goals, as Collins and freshman Margot van Hecking Colenbrander would each find the back of the cage once in the final minutes of the half.
UConn earned 10 penalty corners to its opponent's two, while outshooting its counterparts 26-5.
The Huskies will face BIG EAST rival Villanova on Friday, Oct. 6 at 7:00 p.m. to begin their three-game road stint.
