STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's track and field team concluded a successful home meet with a win at the 2016 Northeast Challenge on Saturday, April 16 at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex. The Huskies tallied 212 team points, nearly doubling up second-place Albany (113).
The meet field included Northeastern, Buffalo, Rhode Island, Albany and Southern Connecticut State University.
UConn picked up 22 points and three of the top four sports in the javelin throw, led by a gold-medal performance from sophomore Kevin Foster (66.18m). In the same event, Adam Boucher (64.94m) and Seth Zuidema (62.50m) nabbed second and fourth, respectively.
The Huskies collected 10 points in the hammer throw when Chris Ackell (57.92m) and Oluwatosin Edwards (55.54m) took third and fourth, respectively.
Connecticut's 4x100m relay team (Delane, Landis, Amonu, Maxwell) added eight points with a second-place 41.45 second time. The Huskies took three of the six scorers in the 1,500m run, led by a first-place finish from junior standout Michael O'Donnell, who crossed the finish line nearly three seconds faster than the nearest competitor at 3:49.76 seconds. Seniors Nick Bertoline (3:52.79) and David Cotton (3:56.37) finished third and sixth, respectively.
Selwyn Maxwell (14.65) and Randall Wall (14.67) swept the top two spots in the 110m hurdles, earning the team 18 total points.
Sophomore sprinter Trenten Beram was the team's top finisher in the 400m dash, securing six points with a 47.04 second finish. Husky duo Chinedu Amonu (10.76) and Jared Delane (10.99) teamed up for 12 points in the 100m dash, taking second and fourth, respectively.
Alvaro Chavez took second in the 800m run, crossing the line in 1:51.41, while freshman standout PJ Garmon (1:54.29) secured sixth and added a point to the Husky team score.
Amonu continued his stellar meet with a first-place 21.27 second finish in the 200m dash, while Husky trio of Michael McGonnigle (14:49.20), Patrick Begley (15:00.13) and Ned Wilson (15:05.11) finished 1-2-3 in the 5,000m run.
The Huskies concluded the meet on the track with a silver-medal finish in the 4x400m relay, crossing the finish line in 3:15.00.
Junior Wyatt Million found himself locked in a battle for the 3,000m steeplechase and finished second on way his to eight points with a finish of 9:24.82. In the same event, teammate Kevin Rogovich grabbed fifth with a time of 9:58.83 seconds.
On the field, 2015 All-American Craig Hunter won the pole vault and collected 10 points with a 5.00m leap, while Tim Murphy (4.85m), Chandler Ives (4.85m) and Ian Bergere (4.70m) rounded out the top five.
Patrick Meyer nabbed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 7.12m, while Amanze Williams (15.03m), Malik Snead (14.85m), and John Landis (14.69m) combined for 18 team points in the triple jump.
Husky duo Matthew Graziano (50.86m) and Ackell (43.68m) teamed up for nine points in the shot put.
