Men's Track and Field Shines at Valentine Invitational

BOSTON - With the indoor conference championship just over two weeks away, the UConn men's track and field team competed in its penultimate regular season meet when it participated in the Valentine Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 13 in Boston, Mass.
"We made continued progress towards conference championship readiness today," said head coach Greg Roy. "There were a number of strong individual results that the coaching staff is pleased with. We'll look to continue to build on this next weekend at Penn State."
Reigning American Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week Oluwatosin Edwards dominated the weight throw for a second-consecutive week, winning the event with 20.66m toss, while fellow captain Chris Ackell took 11th with a throw of 16.66m. Edwards also picked up a top-10 finish in the shot put with a toss of 14.71m.
Trenten Beram, who owns the second-best 200m time in The American this indoor season (21.28), posted a sixth-place finish in the event on Saturday, crossing the finish line in 21.36.
Senior Selwyn Maxwell continued a strong start to his season, winning the 60H with a stellar 7.93 second time. Teammate Stephon Henry followed up in 11th-place with an 8.23 second result. Patrick Meyer matched a season-best with a 7.37 second finish in the 60m dash, taking 63rd overall.
Freshman Kyle Barber nearly matched his collegiate-best in the 800m run, finishing 20th (1:52.77). Chinedu Amonu's 47.29 second 400m dash time was a season-best and earned him sixth-place overall.
Freshman PJ Garmon shaved over three seconds off his career-best in the 1,000m run, taking eighth overall with a 2:25.18 second finish, while senior David Cotton secured 17th (2:29.46). In the mile run, Nick Bertoline was the top finisher for UConn, taking 34th with a collegiate-best 4:09.10 time.
In the triple jump, Harley Lacroix and Malik Snead each posted 14.52m leap, taking fourth and fifth, respectively. Snead shined again in the long jump, notching a new personal-best 6.73m leap, just ahead of Demario Gray's 6.68m result.
The high jump was highlighted by a pair of top-15 finishes from Jordan Lumpkins (1.90m) and Tobey Belton (1.90m), who finished 10th and 11th, respectively.
The Huskies delivered five top-15 performances in the pole vault, led by Chandler Ives' season-best 4.95m mark. Tim Murphy (4.80m), Ian Bergere (4.65m), Meyer (4.50m) and Derek DiBona (4.50) all placed in the top-12.
