Men's Track and Field Shines at Terrier Classic

BOSTON- The UConn men's track and field team resumed its 2016 indoor season over the weekend with a pair of first-place finishes at the 2016 John Thomas Terrier Classic, hosted by Boston University, on Jan. 29-30.
On Friday night, UConn's DMR squad (Kyle Barber, Nasir Haines, Chris Heydrick, PJ Garmon) picked up a gold medal in the event, crossing the finish line in 9:53.62, which was 0.89 seconds faster than the nearest competitor.
"The team as a whole showed some nice progress today," said associate head coach Rich Miller. "Oluwatosin continued his winning streak in the weight throw and we had some strong performances in the sprints. Murphy continues to improve in the pole vault and our freshmen had significant performances in the 800. Overall, we had many guys take a step forward in their development."
Sophomore Stephon Henry kicked off action on the track on Saturday morning, collecting a ninth-place finish in the 60m hurdles with a 8.20 second result, topping teammate Randall Wall (8.26). Garmon continued a strong meet with a college-best 1:50.62 800m result en route to eighth-place finish.
Senior captain Oluwatosin Edwards earned the team's second first-place finish of the afternoon when he won the weight throw with a season-best 19.57m toss, while fellow captain Chris Ackell took ninth with a throw of 17.74m. Edwards also narrowly missed a top-10 result in the shot put, taking 14th with a toss of 14.88m.
Junior standout Chinedu Amonu nabbed seventh in the 400m dash with a time of 47.47, while freshman Kyle Trocki took 15th in the 500m run with a 1:05.93 finish.
Demario Gray was the Huskies' top finisher in the long jump, checking in in 13th with a leap of 6.82m before also earning a top-10 finish in the high jump with a 1.95m leap. In the 200m dash, Trenten Beram ran a season-best 21.28 second race, taking fifth overall.
UConn's 4x400m `A' relay squad (Beram, Aaeron Sykes, Haines, Amonu) rounded out team track action with a fifth-place finish, crossing the line in 3:13.71.
Tim Murphy matched an indoor career-best in the pole vault, earning a silver medal with a 4.90m leap. Teammates Chandler Ives (4.80m) and Derek DiBona (4.70m) grabbed sixth and ninth, respectively.
Saturday's meet is the first of two competitions in Boston for the program during the indoor season. The team is currently scheduled to compete at the Valentine Invitational on Feb. 13.
