Sept. 22, 2015 STORRS, Conn. - Dr. Deena Casiero, who has a wide variety of experience on both the professional and collegiate level, has been named the Director of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut.
Casiero comes to UConn after serving as the head team physician and medical director of Hofstra since 2010 and also served as the Tournament Physician and Director of Player Medical Services for the United States Open Tennis Championship. She also has been the assistant team physician for the NHL's New York Islanders since 2010.
Casiero's appointment completes a well-rounded sports medicine team as she joins team physicians Dr. Giselle Aerni and Dr. Matthew Hall.
"On behalf of everyone in the Division of Athletics, I am happy to welcome Deena back to UConn," said UConn Director of Athletics Warde Manuel. "Our staff, coaches and most importantly our student-athletes, are very fortunate to have Deena overseeing our Sports Medicine area with the expertise and experience she has.
"The Division of Athletics is indebted to Dr. Aerni and Dr. Hall to provide care for our 700 student-athletes over the past year. They have worked tirelessly and I can't say enough about their commitment, work ethic and professionalism. Along with the orthopedic care we receive through UConn Health, we believe that we have the best medical care for athletes in the country."
Casiero received her undergraduate degree in athletic training from Springfield College in 1999 and took pre-medical preparation classwork at Stony Brook University before graduating with a medical degree from New York Medical College in 2006. Casiero did a residency at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx from 2006-2009 and a sports medicine fellowship at UConn Health from 2009-10.
She has provided coverage for UConn teams, the Connecticut Sun of the WNBA, Hartford Public High School, Sports Medicine and Sciences Academy in Hartford and the Hartford Wolfpack of the AHL.
She was an assistant athletic trainer at St. Joseph's College in Patchogue, N.Y., from 2000-02.
Casiero is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.
