Three Huskies Compete on Day One of NCAA East Regionals

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Two weeks after winning the 2015 American Athletic Conference outdoor championship, three University of Connecticut men's track and field student-athletes competed on the first of three days at the NCAA East Regional, held in Jacksonville, Fla. on Thursday evening.
In total, the Huskies boast 12 NCAA regional qualifiers, which marks a new outdoor single-season program record. For more information on the Huskies' 12 athletes in Florida, CLICK HERE. The top 12 competitors in each event at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds will advance to the NCAA Championships, held June 10-13 at the University of Oregon.
Chinedu Amonu, winner of the American Athletic Conference 400m dash, advanced to the quarterfinal of the event on Thursday, taking third in his heat with a 47.17 second time that earned him an automatic qualifier into Friday's quarterfinal which is set for 6:15 p.m.
American Athletic Conference hammer throw champion Chris Ackell finished 28th in the event, notching a 60.98m result in his final collegiate meet. Darnell Cummings narrowly missed advancing to the 100m quarterfinals, checking in in 26th with a 10.57 second result in the prelims.
John Landis, who scored at The American outdoor championship with a 6.88m leap in the long jump, finished 40th with a 6.95m mark on Thursday.
Two weeks ago, UConn claimed the league outdoor title, winning the meet with 158 points. The outdoor championship win marked the fourth under head coach Greg Roy, who is in his 30thseason at the helm of the program. Roy and his staff were selected as the Outdoor Conference Staff of the Year by the league's coaches following the conclusion of the meet.

Action resumes on Friday with the javelin throw (Brian Eilers) set to begin at 12 p.m. In addition to the javelin, the program has student-athletes competing in the 110m hurdles (Randall Wall, Selwyn Maxwell), 200m (Trenten Beram), discus throw (Matthew Graziano), pole vault (Cory Duggan, Craig Hunter), and high jump (Justin Sicarai) in the second of three competition days.
