Men's Track and Field Shines at 2015 Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas- Competing in its first-ever Texas Relays, the University of Connecticut men's track and field wrapped up day three of competition at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. The Huskies faced tough national competition during the three-day stretch, but notched a pair of top-10 finishes and threatened two school records in their outdoor season opener.
The nationally-renowned event featured more than 7,000 entries from athletes across high school and college. Representatives from 34 states and eight countries took part in the nationally-recognized event which stretched from Wednesday to Saturday.
UConn's SMR squad that included Darnell Cummings, Patrick Hayes, Robert Hovanec and Alvaro Chavez, grabbed a 12th-place finish in the event on Friday afternoon, clocking in at 3:23.66, and narrowly missing the program record by .08 seconds.
The DMR team (Michael O'Donnell, James Lowe, Nick Bertoline, David Cotton) picked up the Huskies' best finish on Friday, checking in in 11th with a 9:58.69 time.
The Huskies' `A' 1600m relay team that consisted of Trenten Beram, Chinedu Amonu, Robert Hovanec, and James, Lowe earned a 22nd-place finish in the event on Friday morning, crossing the finish line in 3:13.42
On Saturday, the 4x200m relay team that included Amonu, Beram, Cumming and Hayes kicked off competition with a ninth-place finish, recording a 1:25.46 overall time, just missing the school record. The Huskies faced off against national powerhouses LSU, Texas A&M and Florida in their heat.
Sophomore standout Craig Hunter impressed in the pole vault on Saturday afternoon, earning a silver medal with an outdoor career-best 5.35m result.
"We competed well," head coach Greg Roy said. "This is a fantastic meet. I'm really proud of the way our guys kept composed against some of the nation's top competition. This was a really solid way to kick off the outdoor season."

The team continues its outdoor season with a pair of competitions next weekend. UConn is slated to travel to Gainesville, Fla. for the Florida Relays on April 2-4 and New Haven, Conn. for the Yale Invitational on April 4.
