EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to the No. 39 nationally ranked Houston Cougars Saturday night in an American Athletic Conference match at the East Hartford Tennis Club. The Huskies are now 7-5 on the year and 0-2 against AAC teams.
"The team fought extremely hard against nationally ranked Houston Saturday night." commented Glenn Marshall. "Summer Walker had an outstanding night in singles, with a focused straight set victory at #5 singles. Emma Alderman and Lizzy Pletnyeva had extremely close matches at #2 and #3 singles respectively. This match shows we are competitive against highly ranked national programs, and making positive strides to raise our program level onto the national scene."
The Huskies picked-up their lone point in the match at #5 singles, where freshman Summer Walker (Conyers, Ga.) defeated Angela Lorenzo, 6-1 and 6-4. UConn's Emma Alderman (Hingham, Mass.) and Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva (Vinnitsa, Ukraine) both lost tough three-set matches at #2 and #3, respectively.
Alderman won the first set of her match with Elena Kordolaimi, 6-3 but fell 6-1 and 6-2 in the second and third sets. Pletnyeva dropped her first set at #3 with Rocio Martin, 6-2, and battled in the second before falling in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (7).
