Huskies Post Five First-Place Finishes at 2015 Yale Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's track and field team opened its 2015 indoor season with five first-place finishes at the Yale Invitational held in New Haven, Conn. on Saturday.
Junior Emily Durgin, who delivered a strong cross country season, started her indoor campaign with a first-place finish in the 3000m run, crossing the line in 10:00.49, which was more than four seconds faster than the nearest competitor.
The 4x400m `A' relay team, which consisted of Deysha Smith-Jenkins, Paris Taft, Faith Dismuke and Nyanka Joseph, delivered a gold-medal finish for the Huskies, topping New Haven and clocking a 3:46.84 time.
Freshman Megan Reese opened her collegiate career by winning the pole vault (3.45m), while Sarah Bowens captured first in the long jump with a leap of 5.59m. Freshman Kelli Thomas rounded out Connecticut's first-place finishes, posting a 17.05m result in the weight throw.
Dominque Smalls and Smith-Jenkins grabbed second and third, respectively in the 60m dash, while Joseph took second in the 200m. Junior Lisa Zimmer earned second in the 500m run, clocking in at 1:15.65.
The Huskies excelled in the distance events, grabbing two of the top five spots in the 1000m run after Emily Howard (2:56.33) and Kat Vodopia (2:58.34) took second and third, respectively.
Freshman Ashley Wiggins began her college career on a high note, notching a second-place finish in the 60m hurdles (8.93). Fellow first-year athlete Tara Belinsky finished third in the shot put (12.93m).
"I am excited to have our first meet in the books," said head coach J.J. Clark. We had some impressive victories and personal bests. More importantly, our team chemistry was excellent and the energy was high. Both the team and the staff are excited to get the ball rolling this season."

The Huskies return to action on Friday, Jan. 16 when they travel to New York City to take part in the NYC Gotham Cup. Action is set to begin at 12:30 p.m.
