STORRS, Conn. - With the 2015 indoor season less than four weeks away, University of Connecticut men's track and field head coach Greg Roy announced that senior Sean Walsh (Freehold, N.J.) and junior Selwyn Maxwell Jr. (Monroe, N.Y.) will serve as captains for the upcoming campaign.
"Both of these young men are the types of leaders that we look for," said Roy. "They represent the UConn Track and Field team both on and off the field and we're looking forward to having them lead our team this winter."
Walsh, who served as one of five captains during the 2013 indoor season, put together a strong 2013-14 campaign, taking sixth in the decathlon at the outdoor American Athletic Conference Championship with 6,348 points. He also captured fifth place in the heptathlon at the indoor American Athletic Conference Championship with 4,848 points.
"It is a rarity for an athlete to be named a captain twice," commented Roy. "It speaks to his competitiveness."
Maxwell earns the honor after a breakout sophomore season in which the Monroe, N.Y. native won the 2012-13 New England Championships 60m hurdle crown with a time of 7.87 before grabbing second in the 60m hurdles at the IC$A Championships. In the outdoor season, he captured third in the 110m hurdles with a time of 13.93 at the conference championships and also took bronze at the IC4A Championships.
"It is a testament to his work ethic for Selwyn to be elected as a captain after a redshirt season."
The Huskies will look to continue their success in The American after earning the league's inaugural indoor title in 2014. The squad finished with 158 points to earn the win, besting second-place Louisville (123 points) and Houston (116 points). The UConn coaching staff was also honored as the American Athletic Conference Coaching Staff of the Year.
Connecticut will kick off its 2015 slate on Saturday, Jan. 10 when the team travels to New Haven, Conn. to compete in the Yale Invitational.
