STORRS, Conn. -- The UConn women's hockey team (0-1-0) hits the road for the first time in 2013-14 with a trip to the midwest for a two-game series at Minnesota Duluth (0-0-0). The Bulldogs are currently the top team receiving votes in both major polls. The games will be the second and third of the year for the Huskies, while UMD is opening its season after defeating the Japanese National Team, 6-2, in an exhibition last week.
Current Huskies Emily Snodgrass (Eastview, Minn.) and Sarah MacDonnell (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) scored in those games, and Kayla Campero (Wallingford, Conn.), Kiana Nauheim (Fairbanks, Alaska), Stephanie Raithby (London, Ontario) and Caitlin Hewes (Stillwater, Minn.) also tallied points. The last time UConn visited Duluth, the Bulldogs, then ranked No. 4 in the nation, swept a two-game set by scores of 8-0 and 4-0 on Oct. 23 and 24, 2010.
UConn's first game under MacKenzie was a close one, but the Huskies ultimately fell, 3-2, to the Union Dutchwomen. Rachel Farrel (Cheshire, Conn.) scored both of UConn's goals in the setback, pounding home a Campero rebound in the second period before taking a feed from Hewes to score a breakaway goal in the third. Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ontario) made 43 saves for UConn, including stopping the first 22 shots she faced.
After the trip to UMD, the Huskies return home to kick off a five-game homestand. First up is a two-game set with Colgate on Oct. 11 and 12.
