HAMDEN, Conn.- The University of Connecticut softball squad fell on the road to intrastate opponent Quinnipiac on Wednesday afternoon, 5-4. The Huskies fell to 17-15 (6-3 BE) and the Bobcats improved to 19-11 overall.
UConn let a 4-2 lead slip away in its nonconference matchup in the bottom of the sixth inning when Quinnipiac added three to the scoreboard on one hit to set the final score at 5-4.
Junior righty Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.) went the entire six innings for her thirteenth complete game this season. Saveriano fell to 11-8 following the Bobcats' five hits and five runs, three earned.
Despite the Huskies notching four hits, including two homeruns against Quinnipiac, Bobcat senior pitcher Heather Schwartzburg (12-3) was awarded the victory.
Junior third baseman Kim Silva sent a two-run blast to right center in the top of the second inning to give the Huskies a 2-0 advantage before the Bobcats responded with a run of their own after a UConn error in the top of the second inning.
Junior second baseman Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.) hit Connecticut's second homer of the day in the top of the fourth with a fly ball over the left field fence.
Trailing 4-2, the Bobcats capitalized on another Husky error and added their fifth hit of the game against Saveriano to upset the Huskies and walk away with a 5-3 win.
Connecticut returns home for a six-game home stretch on Saturday when they host BIG EAST opponent USF for a doubleheader on April 14 starting at noon followed by an 11 a.m. contest on Sunday.
