SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Huskies suffered their first BIG EAST losses of the 2012 season at the hands of the Fighting Irish on Saturday afternoon. UConn was defeated by Notre Dame in back-to-back games, 5-2 and 7-3. The two setbacks moved the team to 13-13 overall and a 3-2 conference mark, while Notre Dame improved to 16-10 and 2-0 in the BIG EAST.
The Huskies usual offensive power was brought to a halt by the Fighting Irish pitchers as Laura Winter struck out eight with seven hits and no earned runs and Brittany O'Donnell struck out four with six hits and one earned run.
Despite scoring first in the first game, the Huskies were unable to capitalize on four Notre Dame errors and the Fighting Irish having back-to-back innings of multiple runs scored. Junior hurler Kiki Saveriano fell to 8-6 after her full game with four strike outs, four earned runs and nine hits against her.
Pitching 2.2 innings, freshman Lauren Duggan was hit seven times and had five earned runs scored against her. Duggan was relieved by senior Ali Adelman who allowed only three hits, but the Husky offense was stagnant and could not come back from a 6-1 deficit.
Freshman Emily O'Donnell was the top Husky at the plate in the first game as she went 3-for-4 and junior Kim Silva and sophomore Audrey Grinnell both went 2-for-3 in the second game.
UConn will conclude its three-game conference series on Sunday at 11 a.m. before returning home to host UMass on Tuesday.
