Softball Tops Bryant On Road, 6-4

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Senior Jen Ward lifted the UConn softball squad to a 6-3 victory over Bryant on Tuesday afternoon to improve the Huskies to 7-10 on the season, while the Bulldogs fell to 4-12.
The Waterford, Conn. native led the Huskies going 2-for-4 on the day and tallying two RBI, scoring two runs and hitting her second homerun of the season. She started the game with a single up the middle and proceeded to steal second and third base before being knocked in on a sacrifice fly by freshman Emily O'Donnell (Niskayuna, N.Y.).
Ward stole two bases against the Bulldogs to move into second place in UConn's all-time career stolen bases with 42 during her four years as a Husky.
Ward increased the Husky lead with her second homerun of the season as she blasted the ball over the left field wall to add two to the scoreboard.
With the Huskies, who outhit Bryant 11-4, owning a 4-0 advantage in the fourth inning, the Bulldogs responded by scoring three runs on a two hits and error.
Ahead 4-3, Connecticut would seal the deal by adding two runs in the seventh inning. O'Donnell scored on a RBI double by redshirt junior Marissa Guches (Sammamish, Wash.) before Guches crossed home plate on single by junior Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.).
Junior hurler Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.) improved to 5-5 with her performance of two hits and two earned runs in 3.1 innings pitched.
The Huskies will face in-state rival Fairfield in Fairfield, Conn. on Thursday, March 22 at 3:30 p.m.
