Women's Tennis Places Second at New England Championships

New England Championship Results
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Victories at No. 2 singles by Srna Stosljevic and No. 5 singles by Abby McKeonguided the University of Connecticut women's tennis team to a second place finish at the New England Championships this past weekend held at Providence College. Connecticut finished with 36 points. Providence won the team competition with 46 points.
Freshman Srna Stosljevic(Novi Sad, Serbia) dominated her flight with straight set victories, needing a tie breaker in the semifinal. She downed Stony Brook, 6-2, 6-3 in the opener before a 7-6, (7-5), 6-2 victory in the semifinal against Sacred Heart. In the final of No. 2 singles, Stsljevic defeated Providence, 6-4, 6-3.
Senior Abby McKeon(Westford, Mass.) also won in convincing fashion. McKeon went 6-3, 6-1 in the opener before winning the semifinal against Sacred Heart, 6-3, 6-4. In the final, McKeon wasted little time, winning 6-2, 6-1.
In No. 4 singles, junior Lucy Nutting(Wilmington, Del.) placed third. Nutting had a come from behind victory in the opener, 2-6, 6-2, 10-5. She dropped the semifinal match to eventual champion from Sacred Heart, 6-1, 3-6, 10-8. Nutting handled her third-place match, 6-3, 6-3 against a competitor from Bryant.
Natalie Robson competed at No. 6 singles, falling to Hannah Zangari of Providence in the finals, 6-0, 6-2.
All three of the UConn doubles tandems placed second on the weekend, falling to Providence in each match.
McKeon combined with junior Jennifer Learmonth(York, Pa.) at No. 1. The duo dropped their match, 8-1.
No. 2 doubles saw sophomore Maxene Weinberg (Marietta, Ga.) and Nutting fall 8-5 in the final. At No. 3 doubles, junior Marie Gargiulo (Weston, Conn.) and sophomore Emilie Burgess(Stonington, Conn.) fell 8-1.
UConn will host UMass on Wednesday, October 17 at the University of Connecticut Tennis Courts in Storrs. That match begins at 2 p.m.
