UConn 4th after First Round at Big 5 Invitational

HUNTINGDON VALLEY, Pa. --- Co-captains Michael Masso (Suffield, Conn.) and Brian Hughes (Fairfield, Conn.) shot a 2-over par 74 and 3-over 75 respectively, Saturday to lead the University of Connecticut golf team to fourth place after the first round of the Big 5 Invitational.
The Huskies shot an aggregate 308 in the first round and trail co-leaders Sacred Heart (306) and Yale (306) by just two strokes and third-place Villanova (307) by just one. Princeton (309) is right behind UConn in fifth place, while host school Temple (310) and Binghamton (311) are sixth and seventh.
The 19-team tourney at the Philmont Country Club concludes with Round 2 on Sunday.
Masso, a junior, is tied for fourth place on the players' leaderboard with Jason Del Rosso of Fordham University, while Hughes, a senior, is in a four-way tie for sixth with Sacred Heart's Josh Salah, Villanova's Derek Jones, and Devin Bibeau of Temple. Princeton's Greg Jarmas shot a 1-over 71 to lead the 99-player field.
For UConn, freshman Stephen Pastore (Greenwich, Conn.) shot a 79 to tie for 41st place, sophomore Chris Wiatr (Woodbury, Conn.) shot 80 to tie for 48th place, and freshman Zach Zaback (Farmington, Conn.), coming off his individual victory in The Connecticut Cup, was tied for 56th place after shooting an 81.
UConn has not finished lower than sixth in any of its tournaments this fall.
