UConn Field Hockey Tops Hofstra, 7-1

STORRS, Conn. - Behind three goals from sophomore Jestine Angelini (Boiling Springs, Pa.), the University of Connecticut field hockey team opened the 2011 season with a 7-1 victory over the Hofstra Pride.
During the contest, the Huskies outshot Hofstra, 22-8, with five shots coming from freshman forward Chloe Hunnable (Chelmsford, England).
Senior Ali Blankmeyer (Convent Station, N.J.) opened the scoring for Connecticut when she connected on a pass from sophomore Anne Jeute (Meerbusch, Germany) at 4:36 of the first half. Both the UConn and Hofstra attack was silenced for the remained of the first half, however.
Hofstra evened the score just 1:40 into the second stanza with Krizia Layne scoring the lone goal of the day for the Pride The deadlock would not last, however, as Blankmeyer scored at 39:56 to give the Huskies a 2-1 advantage for good.
UConn closed out the second half with six straight goals to claim the 7-1 victory.
Angelini struck all three times off penalty corners for Connecticut while Hunnable connected on two penalty corners of her own.
At 58:30, senior back Rayell Heistand (Hamburg, Pa.) connected on a penalty stroke to extend the UConn lead.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Mansfield (Cornwall, England) earned her first victory of the season with three saves in 70 minutes of action.
Hofstra will face Stanford on Saturday at Noon in the second game of the Husky Invitational.
