EUGENE, Ore. - UConn graduate Mike Rutt (Sinking Spring, Pa.) finished competition at the USA Track and Field Championship this evening, as he ran in the 800m semifinals. This was Rutt's third straight appearance in the 800m run at the USA Track and Field Championship.
Rutt, who was in second place at the 200m mark, was tripped and knocked down by another runner which caused him to finish the race in 1:56.40. Following the race Rutt appealed the race result, but the meet referee upheld the original decision, with Rutt not advancing to the 800m finals.
"I'm very disappointed in how things ended tonight, you don't want to miss qualifying for the USA Track finals because you were tripped up," head coach Greg Roy said. "Despite getting tripped at the 200m mark, Mike finished the race hard and did all that he could do to try and make it to the finals."
Rutt was one of nine collegiate athletes to compete in the semifinals of the 800m run this evening, and the only representative from the BIG EAST. The top four finishers from both semifinal heats advanced to the finals which will be held on Sunday (June 26).
