Rutt To Compete At USA Track And Field Championship

STORRS, Conn. - Coming off of his final meet as a Husky at the NCAA Championship earlier this month, UConn senior Mike Rutt (Sinking Spring, Pa.) now looks to perform well at the USA Track and Field National Championship in Eugene, Ore. The competition will take place June 23-26, with the first round of the men's 800m set to take place at 6:50 p.m. EST on Thursday, June 23. The semifinals will begin at 8:15 p.m. EST on Friday, June 24, while the final is set for Sunday, June 26 at 5:27 p.m. EST.
"This will be Mike's third time running at the USA Track and Field Championship, and if he runs his race I think he has a good shot at being one of the top finalists in the end," head coach Greg Roy said. "This will be his last race in a UConn uniform and I know he will put forth his best effort to kick start his future running career."
Rutt posted a season-best 1:47.75 in the semifinals of the NCAA Outdoor Championship but fell short of competing in the finals, placing 14th overall in the prelims of the 800m run. He hopes to improve upon this performance this weekend, which will mark his third consecutive appearance in the USATF Championship for the men's 800m run. In 2009 he placed sixth overall, with a then personal and UConn best time of 1:47.57 after coming across the finish line as the first collegiate runner in the semifinals. Last year, Rutt placed 13th in the semifinals with a time of 1:48.27.
