STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut men's track and field senior Mike Rutt (Sinking Spring, Pa.) has been named to the First Team University Division CoSIDA Academic All-District Team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America this afternoon. This is the first time that Rutt has earned a CoSIDA Academic honor during his career.
Earlier this year Rutt was named an American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Institutional Male Scholar-Athlete and a Babbidge Scholar by the University of Connecticut Honors Program. The two-time captain is an exercise science major and has earned three BIG EAST Academic All-Star accolades during his time at UConn.
Next week, Rutt will compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championship for the second time in his career after placing sixth in the 800m run at the East Regional meet. Rutt finished the 2011 indoor season as the NCAA runner-up in the 800m run and as the conference champion, while placing second in the event at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship.
The Academic All-District first team honor is the first step in selecting this year's Academic All-America team. With his first team selection, Rutt will now appear on the Academic All-America national ballot.
