Springer, Barnes & Vance Named NCBWA All-Americans

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - Three UConn baseball standouts were named to the 2011 NCBWA Division I All-America Team as announced on Wednesday afternoon.
George Springer and Matt Barnes were named to the NCBWA First Team, while junior Kevin Vance was tagged with Second Team honors.
Springer led the Huskies in 2011 with 61 runs scored, 77 RBI and 31 stolen bases in 66 games played. He also led the team with 12 home runs and a .609 slugging percentage.
Springer was named the 2011 BIG EAST Player of the Year and a Louisville Slugger All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. He joined Barnes as a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist as well as an All-BIG EAST First Team selection. Both he and Barnes were also named to the Baseball America All-America First Team.
Barnes posted an overall record of 11-5 in 17 starts in 2011. He recorded three complete game shutouts on the year and an ERA of 1.93 in 121.0 innings of work. He held opponents to a batting average of .187 and registered a team-high 117 strikeouts. Barnes was named the 2011 BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and a Louisville Slugger All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. He also was named to the 2011 All-BIG EAST First Team.
Vance finished the 2011 season with a 1-0 record and 13 saves in 27 appearances on the hill for the Huskies. The junior threw 29.2 innings and struck out 31 batters en route to an ERA of 2.12, third-best on the team. His 13 saves on the year marked a UConn single-season record, while he improved his career tally to 21, second-best among all-time Huskies.
