Meghan Cunningham Wins BIG EAST 3,000m Steeplechase

STORRS, Conn. - UConn senior Meghan Cunningham won the 3,000m steeplechase today at the BIG EAST Championships. Cunningham ran a stadium-record time of 10:14.07. UConn sits in fifth in the team standings after two days of competition with 24 points. Defending champion Louisville is first with 50 points.
Cunningham, also a captain on the women's soccer team, becomes just the second UConn women's track athlete to win a BIG EAST Title in the steeplechase, joining Jillian Sullivan in 2007.
Senior All-American Trisha-Ann Hawthorne continued her bid to become the first athlete in BIG EAST history, men or women, to win two separate events in four consecutive seasons by advancing to the finals in the 100m and 200m. Hawthorne broke the stadium record and placed first in the 100m prelims with a time of 11.43. She placed second in the 200m prelims at 23.51.
UConn had both sophomore long jumpers place in the top-five in the long jump with Whitney Holder placing third with a top mark of 6.02m (19' 9"). Kristen Brown placed fifth at 5.92m (19' 5.25").
Redshirt senior Tynisha McMillian placed fifth in the shot put with a top distance of 15.18m (49' 9.75").
Rising freshman star Celina Emerson advanced to the finals of the 400m, running 54.92. She finished the prelims ranked sixth.
UConn's 800m junior All-American Heather Wilson placed second in the prelims and advanced to finals with a time of 2:08.09. She will be joined by sophomore All-American Brigitte Mania who ran 2:11.83 and placed sixth.
Senior All-American Leah Andrianos advanced to the finals of the 1,500m running 4:31.64.
Freshman hurdler Madalayne Smith placed third in the prelims of the 100m hurdles with an ECAC qualifying time of 13.82.
Sunday will mark the final day of the 2011 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. Events begin at 10 a.m.
