BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - With a sixth place finish in the 800m quarterfinals at the NCAA East Regional, Mike Rutt will now represent the University of Connecticut at the NCAA Outdoor Championship. The Huskies had four athletes competing on day two of the East Regional, and ended the day with two top-25 finishes.
"Mike ran like he knew how to today, he stayed in position for the entire race and made sure that he finished in the top three in his heat so that he could move on to Des Moines," head coach Greg Roy said. "He ran like he has been here before, he ran with confidence. He can now start preparing for the NCAA Championship and try for a title in the 800m run in a couple of weeks. I am looking forward to seeing what he can accomplish in Iowa."
Rutt, who qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championship for the second time in his career, placed sixth overall in the 800m quarterfinals, finishing in 1:49.15. Rutt's time is his second best of the season, topping his mark that he set yesterday during the first round. Dan Holst also competed in the 800m quarterfinals for the Huskies, finishing 21st overall with a time of 1:51.62.
Aaron King and Joshua Faboyede were also in action today for the Huskies, King finishing 43rd in the triple jump and Faboyede placing 34th in the hammer throw. King posted a jump of 14.21m, his second best mark of the season, while Faboyede recorded a throw of 56.60m.
The NCAA Championship will take place in two weeks, June 8 through June 11 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. Check back to UConnHuskies.com for updates and links to follow Rutt during his NCAA run.
