BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - University of Connecticut seniors Mike Rutt and Dan Holst each qualified for the quarterfinals of the 800m run this evening, as the Huskies completed day one at the NCAA East Regional. The Huskies had seven athletes in action today, including Kyle Edmonds, Mike Alleman, Cody Unger, Justin Siekierski, Aaron King, Rutt and Holst.
"Today was a little tough for us, Cody and Kyle just missed qualifying for their events, but on the flip side Mike and Dan had a couple good races in the 800m to move on to tomorrow's race," head coach Greg Roy said. "With the five guys that we have competing tomorrow we have a good shot at sending all five of them to the NCAA Championship. We need to come out strong tomorrow and see what we can do."
The duo of Mike Rutt and Dan Holst were the only Huskies to move on during action on day one, as they will compete in the quarterfinal of the 800m run tomorrow evening. Rutt won his heat and finished second overall during the first round, running a 1:49.41, his second best time of the season, while Holst finished fifth in his heat and 21st overall with a time of 1:50.57.
Kyle Edmonds just missed qualifying for the quarterfinals of the 400m hurdles, as he finished 26th in a time of 52.62 during the first round this afternoon. Edmonds finished sixth in his heat and recorded his second best time of the season.
Mike Alleman and Cody Unger also just missed qualifying for the NCAA Championship in the shot put and javelin respectively. Alleman recorded a distance of 17.55m in the shot put, his second best mark of the season, to finish 16th, while Unger placed 15th in the javelin with a throw of 67.72m.
