UConn Takes Second At ECAC Championships

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's track and field team competed at the ECAC Championships in Princeton, N.J. this weekend and placed second with 65 points. Duke won the team title with 73.75 points.
Redshirt-senior Tynisha McMillian (Stamford, Conn.) put forth an impressive performance today, winning both the shot put and the discus. McMillian recorded season-best throws in both events, recording a top throw of 15.86m in the shot put and 48.34m in the discus. McMillian made her attempts count, winning the discus on her last attempt.
UConn's other first-place performance came form Ilva Bikanova in the high jump. Bikanova out-jumped 27 other competitors with a personal record 1.81m (5'11").
"Tynisha and Ilva had to win for us to get into the title race and they did. It's nice to know we have been a top team in every championship over the past six years. We look to take a large group to the NCAA Regionals as well," said Head Coach William Morgan.
Sophomore Whitney Holder just missed out on the ECAC Championship in the long jump. Holder reached 6.06m while Delaware State's Kendra Mayers won the title with a top jump of 6.12m.
Meghan Cunningham continued her strong senior campaign, placing third in the 1,500m with, running 4:22.42 in the finals. Cunningham won the 3,000m steeplechase at the BIG EAST Championships last weekend.
UConn saw fifth-place finishes in the 400m and 800m from Celina Emerson and Brigitte Mania, respectively. Emerson ran 54.91 while Mania finished the 800m in 2:05.84.
Freshman Lauren Sara also placed fifth in her event, the 5,000m. Sara ran 9:33.13 and fell behind Duke sophomore Juliet Bottorff who ran 9:25.44.
UConn's 4x400m record-holding relay team ran 3:43.14 and placed fourth. Freshmen Imani Sudlow and Celina Emerson led off before handing to sophomore Ana Groff. The squad was anchored by freshman Tiffany Daley.
