STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut men's track and field team will continue their championship quest this weekend, as they try for their second straight title at the IC4A Championship. The IC4A meet will be held at Princeton University from Friday, May 13 to Sunday, May 15. A complete schedule can be found HERE.
"Our priority at the IC4A Championship is for athletes to qualify for the NCAA Championship that haven't already done so," head coach Greg Roy said. "We will go out there with our best performances and at the end of the meet count up all of the points and see how things work out. Some athletes may not be competing in their usual events, but instead competing in things that can help them when it comes time for the NCAA Regional meet. This year, the IC4A meet is back-to-back with the BIG EAST championship so it is a quick turnaround between meets, but it will be a good test for everyone to see what they can come out with this weekend."
Entering the meet, the Huskies are the No. 2 team in the Northeast Region as they improved on their weekly ranking after claiming the BIG EAST Outdoor title last weekend. Seventeen individuals rank in the top-15 in the region, led by Mike Rutt and Aaron King who lead the area in the 800m run and long jump respectively.
Nationally, nine Huskies rank in the top-30, including Rutt who turned in the eighth fastest time of the year in the 800m run at the BIG EAST Championship (1:48.57). The trio of Tyrone Faverey, Cody Unger and King has also notched top-20 performances this season, Faverey with his mark of 15.57m in the triple jump, Unger with a distance of 71.23m in the javelin and King with 7,042 points in the decathlon. Faverey and King each set their respective marks last week when they won conference titles in both events, while Unger's mark came earlier this year at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational.
King also has two other top marks in the nation following his performance at the BIG EAST Championship, as he ranks 22nd in the triple jump with a mark of 15.47m and 23rd in the long jump with a distance of 7.57m. Jesse Chapman joins King in the decathlon, ranking 29th with a point total of 6,643, while Kyle Edmonds is the only other Husky to post a top-30 time in a track event, as he ranks 25th in the 400m hurdles (51.96). Noel James, Mike Alleman and Joshua Faboyede round out the list for UConn, as James is 22nd in the high jump (2.13m), Alleman is 29th in the shot put (17.37m) and Faboyede is 29th in the hammer throw (59.59m).
Last season, the Huskies captured their first ever IC4A Outdoor title with nine top-five finishes, including five from current Huskies. Those Huskies include; Mike Rutt (3rd-800m), Kyle Duggan (2nd-pole vault), Tyrone Faverey (5th-triple jump), Mike Alleman (5th-shot put) and Aaron King (3rd-decathlon).
