UConn Dominates At Husky Spring Invitational

STORRS, Conn. - Eight Huskies brought home first place honors as the University of Connecticut men's track and field team hosted the Husky Spring Invitational this afternoon at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. Winning individual events for UConn were Joe Clark, Tyrone Faverey, Mike Rutt, Jesse Drinks, Chris Whyte, Scott Johnson, Jesse Chapman and Noel James.
The Huskies won the first three track events of the day, starting with Clark in the 3,000m steeplechase, who finished with a time of 9:34.08. The 4x100 meter relay team of Darnell Cummings, Kevin Smith, Drinks and Faverey posted the lone relay victory on the day, as they finished in a time of 41.52. Rutt followed this up with a victory in the 1,500m run, crossing the line in 3:51.81.
Drinks notched UConn's third individual victory of the meet as he won the 100m dash in a time of 10.72. Whyte and Johnson posted the final track victories for UConn as they won the 400m hurdles (53.87) and the 5,000m run (14:54.84) respectively.
James, Faverey and Chapman were the individual winners in field events during the Husky Spring Invite, led by Chapman who won the decathlon yesterday with 6,541 points. James was victorious in the high jump with a clearance of 2.04m, while Faverey had a winning triple jump of 14.32m.
Four Huskies also brought home second place finishes in field events, including Joshua Faboyede, Justin Sierkierski, Mike Alleman and Matt Alexander. Faboyede placed second in the hammer throw with a distance of 56.82m, Siekierski was second in the javelin (61.20m), Alleman was second in the shot put (16.94m) and Alexander was second in the pole vault with a clearance on 4.64m.
On the track side, Whyte posted a second place finish in the 110m hurdles (14.93), while the 4x400 meter relay team of Kyle Edmonds, Dan Holst, Rutt and Whyte also placed second with a time of 3:17.94.
Also recording top-five finishes for UConn on the day were Tim Bennatan (1,500m run, 3rd-3:52.87), Cummings (100m dash, 4th-10.90), Holst (400m dash, 5th-49.93), Eric Alfiere (javelin, 3rd-60.24m) and Alleman (discus, 5th-48.69m).
The Huskies will return to action next weekend when they participate in both the Brown Invitational and the Hurricane Alumni Invitational. Both meets will take place on Saturday, April 16, with the Brown Invitational taking place in Providence, R.I. and the Hurricane Alumni Invitational taking place in Miami, Fla.
