Softball Drops Game To Rutgers, 13-7

STORRS, Conn. - Heading into the seventh and final inning with a 5-4 lead, the UConn softball team allowed nine runs in the final frame and fell, 13-7, to Rutgers today at the UConn Softball Stadium. UConn scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning but it was too late as the Huskies fell to 13-15 (3-2 BIG EAST) on the season. Rutgers improved to 11-20 (1-5 BIG EAST).
UConn sophomore Kiki Saveriano took the loss. She pitched six and a third, allowing nine runs on 11 hits and seven strikeouts. She dropped to 7-10 on the year.
Freshman Katelyn Callahan came on to record the final two outs but allowed four runs on three hits.
UConn senior Julie Towers and freshman Andrea Huelsenbeck each finished the day 2-4 with two runs and an RBI. Huelsenbeck hit her fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning.
UConn went into the fifth inning ahead, 5-0. Rutgers made it 5-4 with four tallies in the top of the fifth before opening the game up with nine runs in the final frame.
UConn will be in action next week with nonconference games at UMass (4/5), at home against Boston College (4/6) at 3:30, at Rhode Island (4/7) and at Hartford (4/9).
