STORRS, Conn. - Connecticut Softball hosted its final nonconference game of the season today at the Burrill Family Field in Storrs and upended Bryant, 7-3. Sophomore Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.) hit a grand slam to left field to lead Connecticut. UConn improved to 18-23 while Bryant dropped to 25-17.
Junior Ali Adelman (San Diego, Calif.) earned the victory. She pitched four innings, allowing one run on four hits. With the victory, she moved back above .500 with a 7-6 overall record.
Bryant, in the middle of its reclassification process to compete in Division I, took an early 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs' leadoff hitter Lauren Guy blasted a triple to deep right center field. Laura Bowen dropped a sacrifice bunt, allowing Guy to head home and give Bryant the early lead.
Adelman settled down after the leadoff triple, retiring 10 of the next 11 batters.
Connecticut loaded the bases in the second inning but failed to generate any runs with Amy DeLuca grounding out to second to end the inning.
The Huskies loaded the bases again in the third inning, this time with Duclos lifting a grand slam just inside the left foul pole. Duclos finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBI and a walk. She improved her season batting average to .273.
UConn added three in the bottom of the sixth for seven runs. Sophomore Marissa Guches (Sammamish, Wash.) hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.), junior Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.) doubled to right center, plating freshman Andrea Huelsenbeck (Rockaway, N.J.) and sophomore Jessica McDermott (Clarksburg, N.J.) singled to right, scoring Vaughan.
The Huskies will face Providence College tomorrow in two critical BIG EAST contests beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Burrill Field in Storrs, Conn.
